Midterm Project | India in Providence by Hyo Jin

India in Providence | revealing Providence's percention of India

I was excited from first day of class thinking what should I do for mid-term because the theme is such broad yet strange. Going through reading and discussions only question that rises is "What is truth?". Does truth even exists? Even scientific truth changes. Only truth that I can tell is how I feel about with honesty. So I decided to approach to yet generalize perception of India by gathering personal idea of India. Gathering fantasy of India and making into an product was it. Asking very superficial and abstract questions to people about India which was what is color/smell/taste of India. For me, Order of question was very important because even though I'm making food product, I didn't want people to narrow their perception of India as food directory. I collected 48 interviews of those and combined as much as possible to represent the idea of India in Providence. But I intentionally cut out bad images of India. More I was working on this project I wanted to show "fantasy" of India and sort of beautify as a product. Talk about presenting this work was very interesting. I don't know what would be the best...about performance and art together. Does it have to be together or not? I'm still thinking on it.

  2. I think satire is a very powerful tool to get a message across. It is a gentle way to get viewers to recognize something rather than bluntly stating something and not alienating viewers is especially important since technological shifts have increased access to information, and given the public opportunity to ignore some sources. This surge in user-created content has exacerbated the crisis in journalism that Cramerotti describes.
Humor is the reason why The Daily Show and The Colbert Report are the top two news sources of young adults. I expect, and look forward to, journalism incorporating humor.
