Jill Magid's work focuses on systems of power. She uses these systems and subverts them to intentionally reveal their inherent failures. Often times the failures of the system are the humans behind/managing the system and with these she reveals their face.
'I can burn your face' is a piece from a larger project called: Article 12 / the Spy project. The title comes from the Secret Service’s phrase to expose a source’s identity.
She was invited by the Dutch Secret Service to help them improve their public image
Ostensibly to better understand the Dutch Secret Service, Magid met with 18 secret service men in bars and non-descript public places.
Magid wrote descriptions of all the agents she met and used those descriptions to essentially ‘burn’ them - expose their identity without using their names and specific characteristics.
The descriptions are pulled directly from her notebook, in her handwriting and made into Neon signes. Each sign represents one of the secret service men that she met.
Each neon sign was accompanied by 18 letterpress prints that are written descriptions of the agents.
The Dutch Secret Service confiscated 7 of the letterpress print descriptions claiming they could compromise the identity of the agents
In response to the confiscation, Magid replaced the letter press descriptions with blank white paper and she permanently shut off the corresponding 7 neon signs.
